What is the EPS?

The EPS enables prescribers - such as GPs and practice nurses - to send prescriptions electronically to a dispenser (such as a pharmacy) of the patient's choice. This makes the prescribing and dispensing process more efficient and convenient for patients and staff.

What are the benefits?

GP practices:

  • can process prescriptions more efficiently
  • have greater control of the prescription
  • spend less time dealing with prescription queries

Dispensers:

  • can process prescriptions more efficiently
  • spend less time sorting and have less paper to send to NHS Prescription Services
  • have improved stock control

Information for patients

If you normally collect repeat prescriptions from the same place, or if you collect them on behalf of someone else, you could benefit from the service:

  • you can collect repeat prescriptions directly from a pharmacy without visiting your GP
  • you won't have paper prescriptions to lose
  • you may spend less time waiting in the pharmacy
  • the service is reliable, secure and confidential

If you're a patient you can find more about electronic prescriptions on the NHS Choices website..
