Appointments

Except for very urgent cases you should try and make an appointment in advance so that you can see the doctor or nurse of your choice.  It helps continuity of care, especially with chronic conditions, if you try and stay with the same person.

To book an appointment, please telephone our reception, call in, or use the online booking facility (ask at reception for a registration form).  Please make a separate appointment for each family member.  A standard appointment is ten minutes.  Bear in mind that there is a limit as to how many problems the doctor can cover adequately in that time.  It is most important you let us know as soon as possible if you are unable to keep your appointment so the staff can offer it to another patient.  We record DNA’s in the medical record if we are not informed that you will not be coming to your appointment.

If you have an urgent problem that needs to be dealt with that day you should telephone reception on 020 8365 3303 at 8.00 a.m. We do not give away urgent appointments to patients who queue at the door. All the doctors have a few appointments reserved for emergencies each day. In addition one doctor does an emergency surgery every morning and evening. Emergency appointments are for acute problems not routine matters and the doctor will only deal with the acute problem. When all emergency appointments have been taken the emergency doctor will telephone patients to discuss the problem.

All of the doctors have telephone appointments which can be booked in advance for routine matters. Please note that the doctor not be able to telephone at the exact time the telephone appointment was booked for. You may also receive a text reminder for telephone appointments.

Patients can register to use an online service which allows you to book and cancel appointments, as well as order repeat prescriptions.  If you would like to use this service ask at reception for a registration form.  Please note you can only book a routine NHS appointment in this way.  It is not possible to book for the practice nurses via the internet.  It is also not possible to book private medicals - these must be arranged through our secretary, Toni.

Our appointments system deals with over 30,000 appointments a year.  We are constantly reviewing and trying to improve it but it also depends on your cooperation (see “how to get the best out of Dukes Avenue Practice").

Additionally, www.patient.co.uk provides information on a variety of medical conditions and self help groups. This site can also be used by patients to book appointments at the practice.
