Appointments

Except for very urgent cases you should try and make an appointment in advance so that you can see the doctor or nurse of your choice.  It helps continuity of care, especially with chronic conditions, if you try and stay with the same person.

To book an appointment, please telephone our reception, call in, or use the online booking facility (ask at reception for a registration form).  Please make a separate appointment for each family member.  A standard appointment is ten minutes.  Bear in mind that there is a limit as to how many problems the doctor can cover adequately in that time.  Half the appointments in each session can be booked in advance and the rest on the day from 8.00am.  If you do not have an appointment and need to be seen urgently we will try to fit you in but be prepared to wait.  You will not necessarily see your usual doctor.

It is most important you let us know as soon as possible if you are unable to keep your appointment so the staff can offer it to another patient.  We record DNA’s in the medical record if we are not informed that you will not be coming to your appointment.

Patients can register to use an online service which allows you to book and cancel appointments, as well as order repeat prescriptions.  If you would like to use this service ask at reception for a registration form.  Please note you can only book a routine NHS appointment in this way.  It is not possible to book for the practice nurses via the internet.  It is also not possible to book private medicals - these must be arranged through our secretary, Jennifer.

Our appointments system deals with over 30,000 appointments a year.  We are constantly reviewing and trying to improve it but it also depends on your cooperation (see “how to get the best out of Dukes Avenue Practice").

Additionally, www.patient.co.uk provides information on a variety of medical conditions and self help groups. This site can also be used by patients to book appointments at the practice.
